As someone remarked, that didn’t take long. Ouch! Fortunately, it wasn’t too bad. Only a few got through to visibility; internal checks caught the other 143. So, sorry to say folks, we are back to required logins. Spammers. If they all disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn’t shed a tear. Much the opposite!

I am once again enabling open comments. We tried this once before, and it worked well until around holiday season of ’06 into February of ’07. By that time, so much junk was showing up, I had to require logins.

That really cut the crap down to almost nothing. Almost, but not quite. Still, it was much easier to manage, say, four or five junk comments than 100+ each time I checked in. But now…

Now something has changed. Dale (the tech half of the Lair) did some sort of magic in the background. I don’t know what. I just know that in the past three weeks or so, there hasn’t been a single spam post in the queue. The only item held was a legit comment from a new member.

With that in mind, I’m taking a chance and opening it up. Of course, the long (rather long) list of “forbidden words” is still in effect, so if anything does show up, it will (I hope) be caught.

Naturally, I’ll be keeping a close eye on this. So long as no spam shows up in the visible comments, and not much ends up in the queue, comments will remain open to all. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this time, it will work.
