Awhile back, in Diablo3?, I mentioned that Blizzard’s obtaining the fansite diablo3.com had set off speculation the company would be announcing Diablo 3 in the near future. Right now, that speculation is reaching fever pitch.

This coming weekend Blizzard will be holding its World-Wide Invitational in Paris, and a major announcement is expected. What has the Diablo fans in a lather is the “teaser splash page” on Blizzard’s home page.

It looks something like the top of an iceberg that is cracking open, with a few hard-to-see runes around the edge. From what I’ve read around the ‘net, the page changes a bit every day. No doubt, the “revelation” is timed to coincide with whatever Blizzard will announce at the WWI.

So fans of the Big D have been poring over that graphic looking for clues that will confirm D3 as “it”. However, less fevered observers have the feeling it might just be related to the Wrath Of The Lich King expansion for WoW. After all, Blizzard hasn’t given a release date for that yet. And the inital Wrath announcement was made over a year ago.

For all anyone knows, it might even be Starcraft 2. That business with the runes could be a bit of misdirection on Blizzard’s part. Whatever is coming, everyone will just have to wait a few more days. And no matter what the “mystery” turns out to be, some fans are going to be disappointed.
