Blame it on Diablo 3. Following all that buzz brought the earlier game to mind, along with the fact that I hadn’t played it in almost two years.

Which is not to say everything went smoothly. The install and video test worked perfectly. Then I ran the game and ended up with a black screen. Uh oh.

After rebooting, I tried Win ’98 compatibility mode. That didn’t work any better. Now it didn’t recognize that the disk was in the drive. Yeah, there’s nothing like trying to get older games to run under a new OS.

Naturally, I searched around the net for a solution. Found that I wasn’t the only one who had that problem. Unfortunately, most of the advice I turned up wasn’t helpful, including all the stuff on Blizzard’s support section.

However, there was a post somewhere that suggested changing the video from 3D to 2D. I gave that a try, and ta-da! the game finally came up. Although I think that the visuals aren’t quite as good as they were under Win ’98 on my other system. It was very dark, for one thing, and I had to turn the gamma all the way up.

I also have little white speckles all over the screen. And no, I don’t mean the rain. They’re very small white dots, which I suppose comes from having 2D set for the video. So far, they’ve been more annoying than anything else.

Otherwise, though, the game is running fine, and I’ve just rescued Caine. You know, it’s been so long, I sat through the whole opening cutscene. Even the conversations. Probably won’t do that much longer; there is only so much voiceover I can take ;)

Surprisingly, it didn’t take me long to get back into the swing of things. Maybe I played it so much in the past, it all got burned into my brain. Heh. The last time I did play was over the ‘net with a friend of mine. She had a Paladin and I had the Sorceress.

We started in February ’06. Finished early August ’06. Yeah, not one of those quick plays ;) But she has two kids, and scheduling wasn’t easy. We could only get together on a Sunday when the children were visiting Grandma, which didn’t happen every weekend.

Still, despite the irregular meetings, it was a lot of fun. Yet, when it was over, we were both pretty much burned out on the game. Neither of us has touched it again until now. Of course, I was playing SP between the sessions, which had an effect on me, too.

So, how much longer will I play? Dunno. A few games, at least. After all, nothing else is available right now. Alas.
