This just in from Voodoo Extreme: Flagship has closed its doors and everyone has been let go. That information comes from Flagships’s Community Manager, Taylor Balbi, so I’d say it’s solid, especially after yesterday’s news. Hellgate: London and Mythos now belong to other companies. Sad.

what no vultures circling overhead as flagship sinks down the drain?
from the sound of it I wasnt interested in H:L, and mythos i’ve not heard or retained much about either.
I hope they don’t blame piracy on this one too…
Hopefully whoever picked up Mythos will finish it. I don’t know how far along it was, Dolnor might be able to provide more info since he was beta testing it.
I think they shot themselves in the foot with H:L. The reaction to the subscription when it was first announced was the initial nail in the coffin, then not releasing any substantial updates to the people who did subscribe along with the game being fairly lackluster to begin with quickly led to it’s demise. I said a long time ago that I was not going to pay in advance for unknown, unreviewed content, which is what they were asking the subscribers to do.
Mart, as HG:L is/was an online game, I doubt piracy would have any effect. As Xian says, the entire launch was a mess, and with no substantial updates, it’s a wonder the game lasted this long.
I have the feeling that Flagship pushed this out the door as quickly as possible because money was drying up and they needed some cashflow.
No doubt in the days to come, we’ll be hearing on what the new owners will do with the IP. I suspect it may not be good news.
Scorpia,
Maybe, we will see Hellgate on gog shortly.
Well, the Mythos test server is still up and people are currently testing/playing it. Maybe it will go *poof* later on Monday… or not. Who really knows?
Tiggs, the Community Mod from early Star Wars Galaxy days (she got fired for taking the players’ side in the NGE fiasco) was working for Flagship Studios as their CRM. I will see what she thinks of the whole affair.

Looks like dark days ahead for Hellgate: London players. Though nothing is certain until the official word and IP ownership is decided if a legal battle ends up coming into play.

Well, in this lawsuit-crazy industry, anything is possible. However, if Flagship gave ownership of the games to Hanbit and Comerica, I doubt they’d have a case. Besides, now they’ve let everyone go, why would they bother?
Dolonor, please do. Always nice to have some inside info ;)
Dang.
Okay, I never bought into Hellgate: London. Mainly because of the subscription thing - it felt like the worst of both worlds to me.
But I feel bad about their closure. I know they were trying to do something really cool, but I think the combination of lack of enough funding and an inexperienced team doomed them.
This is a suck.
As much as some people are gloating over Hellgate’s demise this sort of thing is never good for the industry and I wish the best of look to those who were laid off. But on the hand their pricing model was doomed from the start and their customer service was lack luster to say the least.
I’ll be sad to see Mythos go. I was really looking for to that game.
I’m sorry for the employees.
However, studios closing shop is part of the natural process of culling the herd. Now we just need Take-Two, EA and Ubisoft to close their doors and the game industry may be saved.
Everyone at Flagship Studios and Ping0 can’t say anything about anything at this moment. They are all under their employment contracts and their signed NDAs.
Many forums are still blazing away with speculation and just plain lies.
The games are still up so everyone is in a holding pattern until an official statement is released via the usual news channels.
That is all…back to gaming! -)
Dolnor
Dolnor, what? No “inside anonymous source” to give us all the dirt? Foo! ;) Yeah, I guess we’ll have to wait awhile for the resolution. While I’m not interested in either of those games, there are plenty of others who do care.
