Is Blizzard looking for writers? It seems that way with this new contest they’re running. What they want are 3,000 to 10,000 word stories set in the Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo universe.

The contest is open globally, although submissions have to be in English. Oddly, there are exclusions: anyone living in North Dakota, Vermont, Connecticut, Maryland, the Province of Quebec in Canada, Queensland, Victoria or the Australian Capital Territory in Australia cannot enter. All I can figure is, there are laws in those places that prevent taking part.

Blizzard is offering a grand prize of a trip to Blizzard HQ in southern California, lunch with Blizzard writers, and a Frostmourne sword. That’s a real sword, replica of the one in WOW, and retails for $429. Pricey.

No surprise, all rights in submissions go to Blizzard, and they can do what they want with the material, forever, without further compensation to the author. Possibly the glow of pride in being a winner will be compensation enough beyond any prizes.

The contest runs from March 13, 2009 through April 12, 2009. I expect they’ll be receiving quite a few entries, given the rabidness of Blizzard fans. And I also wonder if this is a way for Blizzard to obtain new content for their games cheaply.
