Atari just announced that Neverwinter Nights 2 has gone gold and will ship on schedule Oct. 31st (of this year ;). Of course, if that’s the ship date, it will take a couple of days for it to be on the shelves.
So, as I figured, the current financial problems of Infogrames/Atari has not had an effect on the release. Now we shall see what, if anything, comes after.
Still not buying it until I know there is a working DM client. Either that, or I hear it is a STELLAR single-player game.
It’s coming out later than I thought, so I’ll probably hold off on getting it until after Christmas. I suspect someone will get it for me as a gift. Then I’m released of all responsibility for having paid for it and won’t feel bad if it stinks.
I may end up holding off too. With Gothic III being released 2 weeks later than NWN2, I won’t have time to play both at once anyway and would probably prefer Gothic III if I had to pick which to play first. Also, I am only about 1/8th of the way through with Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars which I have really grown to enjoy although it didn’t grab me at first, so that would be 3 games vying for my limited gaming time.
I’m not that interested in NWN 2 that much. Why? NWN had one of the wrost play balance around. All you had to do was to create a mage/druid character which I did. And my character never had to fight or cast spells or anything. My familar and animal companion did ALL the fighting.
Some fun.
Where has all the great games gone?
When will we see the like of another Balder’s Gate?
Or another Icewind Dale?
Or another Wizardy 8?
(one of the really great series that went out with a bang and not a whimper.)
For me, I’m really looking forward to the Heroes of Might and Magic 5 expansion next month. This is a great game more similar to Heroes 3 than 4 (thank God) with a lot of rpg elements to boot. I wish Scorpia would try it. But she doesn’t like strategy games. However, Heroes 5 is more like a fatasy war game meets rpg and strategy games.
Does anyone know if Ubisoft has any plans to bring back the Might and Magic rpg games?
They did a great job on Heroes 5 by the way.
Once again, I bring off topic news and a reminder: forum!
Several months ago the independent site rpgdot (rpgdot.com) was bought by some site called “jolt” and suffered a rather tragic, albeit shiny, redesign and interminably slow load times. Well it seems the folks providing much of the content for rpgdot decided enough is enough, and have set out on their own yet again. Introducing rpgwatch.com. If it is anything like the old rpgdot it should be a good source of RPG news and discussion. Certainly the old rpgdot was on my daily list. Enjoy.
Oh, and back on topic, NWN2 – Woot! Now I just need a new PC to play it, and a new job to pay for the PC.
Well, thanks for the off-topic news Bargeral :) I’m gonna bookmark it.
That’s good news. Thanks for the heads-up, Scorpia. :)
I spent $10 on the pre-sell NWN2 box at Best Buy over a month ago in order to be eligible to download the early release toolset (which I’ve played with for the past two weeks). That should answer the “will you buy it?” question. ;)
I doubt the official campaign will appeal to me even if it’s technically perfect — except as an example module for tearing apart in the toolset and seeing how they made things happen. Chris Avellone, et al (going back to Black Isle Studios), don’t write *my* kind of stories. Just a matter of taste; I’m in no way implying that any of their stories were bad.
So it’s not for the OC that I’ll buy NWN2 at release. Rather, I’m itching to get my hands on the full game because I’m kinda at a standstill in my toolset work. I need to see how things look and operate inside the actual game before I can go much further.
I agree with Xian, it’s Gothic III for me too!

NWN is a great game, and I am very much hoping that Atari can commit some resources to the successor’s success; though this type of game relies just as much from a fanatical fan base as it does from official support. My new VM Raptor DCX is waiting to devour it!
Drac, I suspect that a lot will depend on what happens (or doesn’t happen)on Nov. 15th. If Infogrames can’t restructure their finances, it could be very bad indeed.
Raptor DCX? Sounds like a hot rig. Whose is it?
Out of curiosity I plugged “Raptor DCX” into Google and … holy moly! That’s a $3999 monster from Velocity Micro. Top of the line everything. Yeah, I would certainly expect that to devour NWN2. (If not, I’m in real trouble with my more modest rig!)
Nice computer, Draconius. :)
Thanks for the compliments.
Yes, Scorpia and Dell, that is the one. I should get it tomorrow. The major change I made was the x1950 GPU in Crossfire and a 150GB Raptor HD. My wife allowed me a very nice early Christmas present. Now, I have to top that present with something better for her…
Woof! I looked up that computer. This Raptor is one hot rig, all right. I wouldn’t mind having one. Except…what would I play on it?
Scorpia, what would you play on a rig like a Raptor?
Why not go back to the GREAT games like Baldur’s Gate 2?
Although I understand that A game called Bloody Magic is suppose to be released soon which sounds like it will be a great game (if we don’t need insect spray to kill all the bugs.).
I just saw an article in PC Gamer where Desslock said NWN2 was awesome, although the article does say the DM Client will be done separately. I hope that doesn’t mean you have to BUY it separately. Not that it matters. If it’s a download, I doubt I’ll get it since I’m on dialup and it would probably take a week to download it.
Still, the article makes me feel hopeful that it’s a good game!
Johm, actually my opinion of BG 2 was not high. As to paying older games, well, are they really set up to take advantage of the capabilities of a Raptor-type system?
Bloody Magic? Sounds, umm, messy to me ;) But I’ll see what I can dig up on it.
Oblivion could certainly use a gaming rig like that Raptor. At high resolution and maxed settings even that machine would be challenged, I think. ;)
GelleKlara, the DM client download will be free. And it shouldn’t be terribly large (like the toolset DL was) since it won’t need to include the game engine, content, etc. It’ll still most likely be a big download for dial-up, but if you’re never going to DM, you’ll never need it.
Scorpia, I thought it was BG1 that you didn’t like. I kinda share that opinion; after the initial excitement of RPG newness wore off, I thought it was pretty blah. But I still reinstall BG2 from time to time and do a run-through with a community-made joinable NPC or three. Heck, for a few months I worked on my own NPC for BG2. Technically complete (it’ll join the party and react to major events just like other NPCs), but woefully incomplete in its banter and “love talks” (she was a love interest for Minsc — don’t laugh! heh).
Oh well, different tastes make the world more interesting. :)
Guys,
The Raptor is “driving” a 24″ Dell 2407 1920×1200 resolution monitor. IMO, you need this type of display in order to fully appreciate what a Raptor-esque system can do.
Indeed, Oblivion is certainly a game that will break almost any system with all settings maxed out at this high of a resolution. One thing is for sure; I will have a lot of fun finding out:}
I’m jealous of your computer, Draconius! Someday when I win the lottery…. ha!
Dell, I would probably never DM a game, but I have run one for my daughter via LAN once in NWN, so I may DL the DM client if the download isn’t too huge. Thanks for the info.
I enjoyed BG2 a LOT more than BG1 (which I quickly grew bored with except for Minsc and Boo, whom I dearly love). I had a continuity problem involving Edwin, Minsc, and Dienara (is that her name?) in BG2 but that was easy to overlook. There were some parts of BG2 that I found very moving, and the villain was awesome.
I did heavily mod the game (with downloaded NPCs, quests, and an alternate ending) but I never did quite finish it. I got stuck in the Underdark and could never get out. I had a pre-Underdark save but by that time I was almost finished that section and I really really had no ambition to backtrack and do it all again. Maybe someday I will, though.
