With arrival of the 1.04 patch imminent (maybe Tuesday), I installed the game and pulled down a trainer mod to fool with over the weekend. I didn’t want to get involved with the real thing at v1.0.

NWN2 came up just fine. I was a little worried about the trainer, but that worked well, too. It gave me the chance to become familiar with the setup and controls without the bother of actually playing the game.

Some of you may remember that I had a graphic problem in Titan Quest where the visuals sometimes had smears. Well, I saw some of that in NWN2, as well. However, there are a lot of video controls, so I’m trying different things to see if I can clear that up.

All the regular classes from NWN are back, with the addition of a new one, Warlock. This one can cast spells all the time, but his spells are rather limited. Also, from looking at the boards, it appears that some of his magic doesn’t work correctly. Fortunately, I don’t do mages, so not a problem for me ;)

All previous prestige classes are back, although “Champion Of Torm” has been renamed “Divine Champion”. Makes sense, as there is no Torm deity in the game.

Some new prestige classes were added: Arcane Trickster (somewhere between magic and roguery), Duelist (for the agile types), Eldritch Knight (a mix of magic and swordplay), Frenzied Berserker (heavy damage dealer), Shadow Thief of Amn (gotta find the guild to join), and Warpriest (best for the MP crowd).

The level cap is 20, and this time they’re allowing you up to four professions when multiclassing (last time it was three). You might think four classes would make for weak characters, but I’ve seen some builds that prove otherwise. Maybe Obsidian should have stayed with three

Anyway, I’m still getting used to the new layout, and not sure I like it all that much. That may just be related to being so familiar with the old one. But that minimap in the upper left looks too big, and I haven’t been able to make it go away.

On the other hand, the top-down view of the camera (my favorite perspective) seemed just fine, and I haven’t had any problems with it. Then again, the trainer is only one room (alas, no arena for testing a build, but I have another mod to try for that).

I don’t know if it was particular to this mod, but everyone I talked to (merchants) came up as a close-up cutscene. Anyone who’s looked at it in the regular game, is that how it is in the OC?

Anyway, I’m hoping all goes well with the patch installation, and if so, I should be posting later this week on real play.
