Somewhere earlier, I know either I or someone else mentioned Planewalker’s forthcoming game, Broken Hourglass. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find that post or comment.

Anyway, I received a note from them (they kindly added me to their mailing list) about how they’re handling inventory management in the game.

It’s quite an interesting system, consisting of an individual inventory and a party inventory. I’ve seen party inventory before in several games.

There’s one I recall, vaguely, where items could be placed in a “pool”, and the weight of the pool distributed among the party members, with stronger ones shouldering more of the load. Wizardry VIII?

This system is different, with the “party pool” being essentially weightless, as though it were a colossal bag of holding. The items are available at all times, except during combat.

That’s a good check, I think. Haul around stuff, but don’t make it too easy to get at. Nice balance there.

Character inventory comes in sets. Apparently, at least from what I read, there aren’t any individually equippable items. But I could be wrong about that.

They are also avoiding the problems of the “Diablo style” inventory, where you could pick up and carry that sword, if only it could be turned sideways (that drove me crazy sometimes!).

Take a look and see what you think.
